• There is some angry buzz among open-source proponents about Google’s decision to delay the release of Honeycomb, its newest version of the Android operating system, to developers other than its biggest partners. According to Bloomberg Businessweek, Google says the made-for-tablet Honeycomb is not ready for other devices yet, so it’s holding the source code back for several months. Andy Rubin, head of Android, told Businessweek that Google remains committed to open source: “We have not changed our strategy.”
Judging from the reaction, it will be tough for Google to continue to trumpet openness without being challenged. “Android’s poor track record on openness is becoming harder to ignore,” writes Ryan Paul at Ars Technica. Paul, who says “most” Android phones’ inability to install third-party firmware belies its advertised open system, continues: “The availability of Android source code after each release was really the last remnant of openness in Android—and now it’s gone.” But Kevin Tofel at GigaOm says he can see why Google’s taking this action. “One simply has to look to the earlier days of Android to see what Google is trying to defend against,” he writes. Tofel says that when manufacturers and developers deliver “poor customer experiences,” such as those on early Android-based tablets, Google’s reputation takes a hit.
• Speaking of Android, BlackBerry maker RIM has confirmed that its first entry into the tablet world, the upcoming PlayBook, will support Android apps. Shares in Research in Motion, which reported fourth-quarter earnings yesterday, are tanking today, down more than 11 percent to about $56.80. While the Canadian company reported a 31 percent jump in profit, it lowered its guidance for the current quarter, citing increased R&D costs tied to its tablet.
Also jumping on the Android app train is Barnes & Noble’s Nook e-reader, which reportedly will officially soon allow users to download apps from an online store by B&N. CNet points out that users who had rooted their Nooks had already been doing this. Barnes & Noble, the beleaguered bricks-and-mortar bookseller that has been seeking a buyer, has found somewhat of a bright spot in the well-reviewed Nook, which Bloomberg says holds 22 percent of the e-reader market. With supported access to an app store, the Nook turns into more than just an e-reader; it becomes a tablet.
