Building a Smarter Planet
Building a smarter planet is IBM's point of view on how interconnected technologies are changing the way the world literally works.
That is, the systems and processes that enable: physical goods to be developed, manufactured, bought and sold; services to be delivered; everything from people and money to oil, water and electrons to move; and billions of people to work, govern themselves and live.
The world is smaller and flatter and more interconnected through forces such as free trade, the Internet and the arrival of globalization.
At a meeting on Nov 12, 2008 in the Council on Foreign Relations' headquarters in New York City, Sam Palmisano described a bold point of view for IBM and for the world.
Sam remarked that in the past several years our eyes have been opened to the profound impact of global environmental change, the geopolitical issues surrounding energy and the realities and dangers of highly complex global financial systems.
"These collective realizations have reminded us that we are all now connected – economically, technically and socially," said Sam. "But we're also learning that being connected is not sufficient. Yes, the world continues to get 'flatter.' And yes, it continues to get smaller and more interconnected. But something is happening that holds even greater potential. In a word, our planet is becoming smarter."

It’s Not Who You Know, It’s Who Knows You
About 15 years ago at Atlanta’s Fulton County Stadium, I saw a guy wearing a T-shirt with the following slogan – It’s Not Who You Know, It’s Who Knows You – Right there and then I thought “That’s it, that’s marketing.”
All the other words on this blog help address that single slogan. Chuck Hester, communications director of iContact, a large email solutions provider, and nationally recognized Linkedin expert is the guest on this Marketing Edge podcast Hester is as good as it gets about living the slogan It’s Not Who You Know, It’s Who Knows You. He has more than 6000 contacts on LinkedIn, and they all know him.
Hester lives and breathes the principles of social networking, among them:

2. Introducing people
3. Proactively listening to others (Chuck will never eat alone at any of the hundreds of conferences and meetings he attends)
4. Always willing to help
This simple philosophy, the Pay it Forward philosophy, helps him in all aspects of his life. Yes that includes business relationships, leads and contacts. Is there a quantifiable return on this investment? Sure there is, and those that are really good with numbers can fascinate themselves with all kinds of formulas and algorithms to achieve their desired result. Hester prefers to focus on the relationships, when you do that, everything falls into place.
It’s a wonderful story not just appropriate during Christmas. In this episode of the Marketing Edge podcast on social media, Hester highlights the Pay It Forward approach in social media and in the physical world. His LinkedIn profile is his window to others and visa versa, He created a physical world networking format called LinkedIn Live which celebrated its first anniversary in 2008. “Operators and distributors continued to top up their inventories in 1Q 2008 after a particularly strong 4Q 2007,” says ABI Research vice president Jake Saunders. “Year on year, 1Q 2008 was up 13.7%, but 2Q 2008 is likely to be softer than in previous years.” Shipment volumes in the developed markets have softened slightly due to the credit crisis, but emerging markets such as Asia-Pacific, South America , and the Middle East/Africa are delivering growth rate percentages in the mid-20s. Mobile devices have proved to be a “lifestyle necessity,” rather than a mere luxury accessory.
Despite all the global concern about price inflation in food, rent, clothing, oil, and utility bills, device manufacturers are not benefiting. The ASP (Average Selling Price) has shown comprehensive price erosion for all manufacturers.
In the market-share stakes, Nokia increased its share to 39.9% while Samsung and LG were also net winners with 16% and 8.4%, respectively. Motorola continued to lose market share (falling 2.6%) to 9.5%, while it was more of a surprise that Sony Ericsson lost market share (down to 7.7%). It may be the case that that Sony’s Walkman and CyberShot lineups are in need of a substantial refresh.
Additionally, WCDMA continues to build momentum with shipment volumes that are up 44% YoY – but no one should count out GSM, as GSM-enabled handsets grew 17% in the quarter.
“Mobile device shipment volumes show no sign of abating in growth, despite the uncertain economy,” says research director Kevin Burden. “ABI Research expects 2008 to top out at 1.28 billion devices shipped – a 12% increase YoY – but these volumes could be subject to the overall global economic climate.”
