Marketers Home In on New Mobile Ad Opportunities

Firefox 5: Track Me, Just Don't Track Me

[Keywords Matched: mobile]
The Mozilla Foundation launched a beta version of its fifth edition of the Firefox Web browser Monday -- just eight weeks after it rolled out Firefox 4. This includes a mobile version for Android as well as versions for Windows, Mac and Linux desktops. Desktop and mobile versions have a Do Not Track privacy feature, and the desktop version's features include a channel switcher that lets users switch between Firefox's Aurora, Beta and Release channels. Firefox 5 includes a location-aware browsing feature.

Marketers Home In on New Mobile Ad Opportunities

[Keywords Matched: mobile]
Mobile-connected devices allow users to browse where desktop computers can't go, thus increasing the amount of online connectivity for many consumers. This could make a major difference in how marketers choose to reach consumers online. A Nielson report released last week details just how customers use their tablets, smartphone and e-readers -- information that's likely to illuminate prospects for advertisers. The firm surveyed 12,000 users and tabulated their responses by device type.

Nook Lust Drives Liberty Media to Court Barnes & Noble

[Keywords Matched: mobile]
Nine months after Barnes & Noble put itself up for auction, Liberty Media made a bid for the retail bookstore chain. John Malone's Liberty Media offered $17 per share for a 70 percent stake in the company, making the potential deal worth over $1 billion. Although the pairing of a media conglomerate and a chain of print bookstores might seem unlikely, the deal is not completely far-fetched. Barnes & Noble is using its Nook, an e-book reader, to break into the digital book world. Amazon's Kindle is the leader in e-books and readers, but the Nook is competitive.

GOVERNMENT IT REPORT
Federal IT Landscape Requires More Gold, Less Glitter

[Keywords Matched: Technology]
Federal chief information officers appear to be heeding the unofficial Missouri state slogan: "I'm from Missouri -- Show Me." In a challenging time for procurement of IT systems and services, CIOs are trying to adopt improved methods for acquiring and managing information resources. In a recent survey of CIOs, federal officials charged with IT operations appear much more open to new ways of doing business, including a more comprehensive approach to managing IT resources.

Toyota's Got a Friend in Salesforce.com

[Keywords Matched: mobile]
Salesforce.com is participating in a social media project with Toyota Motor, in what could launch the CRM company into an entirely new industry -- telematics. Or not. The agreement between Salesforce.com and Toyota to collaborate on this offering, called "Toyota Friend," is still very much in its early days, said Robin Daniels, director of product marketing for Salesforce.com. Still, the concept the two companies outlined is intriguing.

Amazon Goes Shopping for Tablet Baby Clothes

[Keywords Matched: mobile]
Reports indicate Amazon may be poised to surge into the tablet PC market. In an interview with Consumer Reports, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos uttered what might be construed as a hint about the company's plans. In addition, in an article in PC Magazine, analyst Tim Bajarin insists the company is indeed working on a tablet, analyst Tim Bajarin wrote in PC Magazine. "I would be very surprised at this point if they weren't working on a tablet," Tom Mainelli, a research manager at IDC, told TechNewsWorld. "More so than any other company out there, they have built up an ecosystem to support a media tablet."

Is Android Really the 'Open' Platform?

[Keywords Matched: mobile]
Much has been claimed by Google ever since the infant days of its Android mobile operating system. The claim it has seemed to champion the most is that its platform is open by nature. One of the biggest complaints about iOS has been Apple's lockdown policy, so naturally, Google would want to make its platform's openness a main selling point. Lately, though, it is starting to become apparent that Android isn't as "open" as we were led to believe.

Facebook Wants to Hook 'Em Young

[Keywords Matched: power]
Facebook hopes to one day be permitted to draw young children into the Facebook fold. CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently suggested altering legal restrictions that prevent children younger than 13 from signing up for a Facebook account. Currently, the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, a federal law passed in 1998, mandates that 13 is the minimum age at which a child may sign up for accounts on sites like Facebook. Zuckerberg argued that in our increasingly technology-driven society, education in online media is what will set students apart and boost the economy.

'Heroic' GoDaddy Defies China's Customer Data Demands

[Keywords Matched: power]
GoDaddy.com and Network Solutions have discontinued their domain name registration activities in China in the wake of stepped-up requests for detailed information on customers. The news came to light earlier this week in Congressional hearings focusing on Google's decision to stop censoring its search results there -- and the subsequent fallout from that decision. The domain registrars' experiences have shed additional light on the increased difficulties Internet-based companies face in the country.

The Fly in the Smartphone Ointment

[Keywords Matched: mobile]
For a second, I thought the Radio Shack ad in my Gmail inbox was trying to sell me a new netbook or a previously unreported competitor to Apple's forthcoming iPad. Then I took the time to read all the ad copy: "Watch. Read. Surf. Play on the Biggest Touchscreen Smartphone Around." Ah. That would be the new T-Mobile HTC HD2, which comes pre-loaded with both "Transformers" movies, a Barnes & Noble e-reader app for flipping through New York Times bestsellers and MobiTV for laughing along with live episodes of "The Office."

Here Comes Google to Save the Sale

[Keywords Matched: Technology]
Google has introduced a feature that gives advertisers another bite at the apple -- that is, it gives them another shot at potential customers who interacted with their company somewhere on the Google Content Network but didn't make a purchase. Google is calling the feature "remarketing." Introduced last year in a beta test, it is now available throughout its advertising network, including on YouTube. The feature offers advertisers flexibility in crafting their campaigns: Marketers can target consumers with different messages depending on which page of a Web site they visited.

French Hacker Played Guessing Game to Access Twitter Accounts

[Keywords Matched: Technology]
After months of investigation by police and the FBI, a French hacker accused of breaking into the Twitter accounts of President Barack Obama and singer Britney Spears was arrested earlier this week. Francois Cousteix, a 25-year-old unemployed man from central France who is known online as "Hacker Croll," is also accused of breaking into Twitter administrators' accounts and copying confidential data -- an attack that was acknowledged by Twitter cofounder Biz Stone last summer. Cousteix wanted to point out Twitter's vulnerabilities, according to reports.

Its upcoming EVO smartphone will hit the market this summer with 4 whole Gs -- that's one more G than most of the best smartphones out there have right now. In this case, "G" stands for "generation," and the EVO 4G smartphone works on a fourth-generation network. There are various flavors of 4G, and Sprint's flavor of choice is WiMax. The network's been working on WiMax for a while now, trying to build networks in major cities across the U.S.

US Must Scramble to Keep Nanotech Lead

[Keywords Matched: Technology]
The United States is the world leader in nanotechnology research, but it may lose that position if it doesn't step up its efforts. That's according to a report issued Thursday by the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. Better coordination of research efforts and a more concerted effort to get important findings into the commercial marketplace are among the recommendations made by the panel of 21 experts. Corporate investments in nanotech research and development are larger than even the substantial federal investments -- $5.7 billion in 2008.
