The MyBiz-Mississippi Entrepreneur Alliance is a network of agencies, non-profits, and resource providers committed to improving opportunities for citizens in Mississippi and West Alabama to start, own, and expand businesses.

About Us

The MyBiz-Mississippi Entrepreneur Alliance is a network of agencies, non-profits, and resource providers committed to improving opportunities for citizens in Mississippi and West Alabama to start, own, and expand businesses. The network sponsors the MyBiz.MS website, operated by The Montgomery Institute (TMI), and coordinates various entrepreneur support activities. MyBizMS was created as a product of the West Alabama – East Mississippi Workforce Innovation in Regional Economic Development (WAEM WIRED) demonstration funded by the U.S. Department of Labor.

In April 2005, Governor Haley Barbour announced formation of the Mississippi Entrepreneur Alliance (MEA).  The MEA was a partnership among agencies promoting entrepreneur development in the state, including:  the State Rural Development Council, Mississippi community and junior colleges (CCJCs), the Mississippi Development Authority (MDA), the Small Business Administration, and TMI. Its mission was to energize and grow Mississippi’s entrepreneurial potential, especially in rural areas, by pulling together service providers and resources into a readily accessible support system for entrepreneurs.

Late in 2005, Barbour and Alabama Gov. Bob Riley jointly applied for and won a $15 million U.S. Department of Labor WIREDgrant for West Alabama and East Mississippi. The eight community colleges involved in WAEM WIRED took the concepts behind MEA and developed them into the comprehensive program of entrepreneur development and support called “MyBiz.” The eight colleges that helped create MyBiz are: Alabama Southern Community College, Bevill State Community College, Shelton State Community College, and Wallace Community College – Selma in Alabama, and East Central Community College, East Mississippi Community College, Jones County Junior College, and Meridian Community College in Mississippi.

Through the MyBiz program, the colleges provided technical assistance to communities to help them become “enterprise-ready” and utilize grow-your-own business strategies, developed entrepreneur training programs for use in community colleges and high schools, developed “Start It! Cards” for all communities in East Mississippi and West Alabama, and developed the MyBiz.MS website that helps entrepreneurs more easily connect to resource providers.

In 2008, Gov. Barbour, MDA Executive Director Gray Swoope, and MDES Director Tommye Dale Favre provided $1,127,000 to take the MyBiz program beyond the WIRED region to the rest of Mississippi. Also in 2008, the University of Alabama and ADECA won a $1 million U.S. Department of Labor Project GATE grant the provided program access throughout Alabama. In January 2010, TMI won a competitive ARRA grant through MDES to establish the Mississippi Entrepreneur Training Program at all 15 Mississippi community and junior colleges.

MyBiz.MS

The MyBiz.MS website serves as a gateway to local, state, and national services. Its goal is to improve connectivity among entrepreneurs, service providers, communities, community colleges, entrepreneur coaches and mentors. A key tool is the Resource Navigator.

Resource Navigator

A unique tool developed by KC Sourcelink, the Resource Navigator provides a sortable (by zip code) database to help entrepreneurs find the nearest providers who can meet their needs. The Resource Navigator also provides Google maps, web links, and contact information. Another key tool is the Start It! Card included in Community Connections.

Community Connections

The Community Connections tool lists every community in Mississippi and West Alabama. Linked to each name is the Start It! Card for that community. These cards display community points-of-contact for utilities, licensing, permitting, tax information and local regulations.  A useful tool in the Finance Flyby.

Finance Flyby

The Finance Flyby tool is designed to help small business owners and entrepreneurs find financial resources to help expand or start a business. It includes information on SBA lending programs as well as state programs in Mississippi and Alabama. It also includes educational information on how to finance a business. A fourth tool is the Marketing section.

Marketing

The Marketing tool provides entrepreneurs information on how to develop and expand their markets. It also includes a list of marketing organizations in Mississippi and Alabama to help entrepreneurs identify ways to expand their markets.

Other

Other important sections of the website include the “Have an Idea? Ready to Start? Want to Grow?” link to MyOwnBusiness.org and the address bar links to Niche Enterprises, the Resource Library, and Nexus Hero. MyOwnBusiness.org provides comprehensive information on starting and growing small businesses. The Resource Library provides links to tool kits, library resources, and more. Niche Enterprises gives access to information unique to home-based, on-line, and other types of small businesses. Nexus Hero shows how communities and entrepreneurs can work together to expand markets on the Internet.
