Hollywood's New Diet Secret...Appetite Control

When it comes to staying in shape, no one feels the pressure more than celebrities. Every time Jen or Angie puts on 5 pounds, the tabloids have a field day.

So how do the stars stay slim? A California Company has recently launched an interesting new product which may signal a major breakthrough in weight loss, and Hollywood is taking notice. The company, Sensa, came up with an innovative way to convince the brain to stop overeating.

Maybe you've read about Sensa in The New York Times and Time magazine, or seen it on Dateline NBC and Extra! It's been getting a lot of press coverage because of its impressive clinical results, its unique approach to weight loss, and the amazing story behind its development.

What's so interesting is that Sensa wasn't created by the typical "diet doctor" - instead, it was discovered, somewhat accidentally, by a neurologist named Dr. Alan Hirsch, based on his 20-plus years of research into smell and taste disorders.

What does smell have to do with weight loss? As it turns out, everything. See, hunger isn't controlled by the stomach, but by the brain, and the primary mechanisms that controls how much we eat is our sense of smell.

Enter Dr. Hirsch, an intrepid doctor and scientist, whose lifelong specialty has been understanding how our senses, and in particular, smell and taste affect the brain's functioning. Dr Hirsch studied hundreds of compounds and after years of research developed a set of virtually odorless and tasteless food sprinkles called "Tastants" that have shown a strong impact on the body's appetite-control center. Then, in one of the largest studies of a non-prescription weight-loss system, these Tastants were tested for effectiveness as a means of weight loss.

The results were significant. Over a 6 month period, 1,436 women and men sprinkled, flavorless "Tastant" crystals on everything they ate, and lost an average of 30.5 pounds - nearly 15% of their total body weight.

Participants achieved these results without having to follow any special exercise regime or diet.

Best of all, Sensa contains no stimulants or fat-blockers, so there are no unpleasant side-effects.

According to Dr Hirsch, "With Sensa, you can eat all the foods that satisfy your senses and you don't have to deal with any intense food cravings or feelings of starvation. Sensa merely helps you eat less of the foods you love and gain greater satisfaction from smaller portions."

It didn't take long before the media - and Hollywood - caught on. After all, a flavorless, odorless sprinkle that triggers this type of weight loss? Sounds like something cooked up by a Hollywood studio, right?

Real weight loss without diet and exercise - too good to be true? Apparently the company anticipated a somewhat skeptical response from consumers so they have launched the Sensa Challange.

They are so sure you will lose weight with Sensa that new customers get to use the product for 30 days so that you can see real weight loss before deciding if they want to pay for it or not.

Bigelow pioneers Oscars with `Hurt Locker' win

.oscars__.jpg By DAVID GERMAIN, AP Movie Writer David Germain, Ap Movie WriterMon Mar 8, 6:08 am ET

LOS ANGELES – Kathryn Bigelow played field commander to bring her raw, relentless Iraq War thriller "The Hurt Locker" to the screen.

After her film triumphed at the Academy Awards with six prizes and made her the first woman ever to win the directing Oscar, she graduated to diplomat with her deft handling of some uncomfortable personal questions from reporters after the show.

Bigelow's rivals included a man from her past — ex-husband James Cameron, whose science-fiction epic "Avatar" also was nominated for the best picture and director that she won.

Backstage, Bigelow judiciously handled reporters' queries about Cameron, who was seated right behind her at the Oscars and joined the standing ovation she received, clapping heartily and saying, "Yes, yes" after she won best director.

"Jim is very inspiring. I think he inspires filmmakers around the world, and for that, I think I can speak for all of them. We're quite grateful," Bigelow said.

Asked what she might say to Cameron about winning over him, Bigelow gave a big laugh and shrugged off the question.

"You left me speechless," Bigelow said. She and Cameron were married from 1989-91, and Cameron won best director and picture for his 1997 blockbuster "Titanic."

First-time winners took all four acting prizes: Sandra Bullock as best actress for "The Blind Side"; Jeff Bridges as best actor for "Crazy Heart"; Mo'Nique as supporting actress for "Precious: Based on the Novel `Push' by Sapphire"; and Christoph Waltz as supporting actor for "Inglourious Basterds."

Bigelow downplayed descriptions of herself as a female filmmaker throughout awards season. After the Oscars, she reiterated that sentiment but made it clear she was eager for other women to follow her lead in winning Hollywood's top filmmaking honor.

"I hope I'm the first of many, and of course, I'd love to just think of myself as a filmmaker. And I long for the day when that modifier can be a moot point," Bigelow said. "But I'm very grateful if I can inspire some young, intrepid, tenacious male or female filmmaker and have them feel that the impossible is possible, and never give up on your dream."

Bullock's win came a day after she won worst-actress for her romantic comedy flop "All About Steve" at the Razzies, a spoof of the Oscars that mocks Hollywood's low-points of the year.

The Razzie win makes Bullock the only actress to receive that dubious prize and an Oscar on the same weekend. Bullock became one of the few Razzie winners ever to collect her trophy in person, showing up at the ceremony Saturday pulling a little red wagon filled with DVDs of "All About Steve" for the audience there.

Where will she keep her Oscar and Razzie?

"They'll sit side by side on a nice little shelf somewhere. The Razzie maybe on a different shelf. Lower," said Bullock, who was a great sport throughout awards season, joking about her worst-actress Razzie nomination. "You take the good with the not-so-good."

The Oscar marks a career peak for Bridges, a beloved Hollywood veteran who had been nominated four times in the previous 38 years without winning. Describing his long career, he borrowed some lines from one of his most endearing and enduring characters, the laid-back bowler the Dude from "The Big Lebowski."

"Ups and downs. What does the Dude say? Strikes and gutters, man," Bridges said backstage. "I'm big on the Dude. I love him."

Known mainly for brazen comedy routines and roles in lowbrow films, Mo'Nique startled audiences with a dark turn as a reprehensible welfare mother in "Precious."

Asked backstage if things would change for her, Mo'Nique declared, "I am a standup comedian who won an Oscar."

Austrian-born Waltz, a veteran TV and stage actor in Europe but virtually unknown in Hollywood before Quentin Tarantino cast him in "Inglourious Basterds," reflected on his sudden Oscar celebrity.

"It's mind-boggling. It's fantastic. It's very intense," Waltz said. "And tomorrow I'll probably be sorry it's over," he said.

"The Hurt Locker" scored a victory for war-on-terror dramas, which until now had found little favor with audiences shell-shocked by nightly news coverage of the action in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The film stars Jeremy Renner as the ace leader of a bomb-disposal unit in Iraq, a man whose addiction to the adrenaline rush of war endanger his colleagues (Anthony Mackie and Brian Geraghty).

War films normally are the arena of male directors, but Bigelow has made action and stories about tough men a specialty, her films including the Keanu Reeves-Patrick Swayze thriller "Point Break" and Harrison Ford's submarine adventure "K-19: The Widowmaker."

"K-19" was a 2002 flop, and it took Bigelow years to get back in action with "The Hurt Locker," which premiered at the Venice and Toronto film festivals in September 2008.

While it pulled in $12.6 million domestically, a respectable showing for an independent film without big stars, "The Hurt Locker" is the lowest-grossing best-picture winner in this modern era of detailed box-office bookkeeping.

It took in less than one-fourth the haul of 2005 best-picture winner "Crash," itself one of the least commercially successful recipients of the top Oscar.

Along with "Avatar," the biggest modern blockbuster with $720 million domestically, the best-picture competition included the $200 million smashes "Up" and "The Blind Side" and the $100 million hits "District 9" and "Inglourious Basterds."

Like "Crash," "The Hurt Locker" was a rare film that swooped in from outside the Hollywood studios to earn the industry's highest tribute. "The Hurt Locker" was acquired by Summit Entertainment after the film played at the Toronto festival, where "Crash" also was bought by distributor Lionsgate.

Joining Bigelow to collect the best-picture Oscar were "Hurt Locker" producers Mark Boal, who also won the prize for original screenplay, and Greg Shapiro.

A fourth producer — financier Nicolas Chartier, a key money man behind the film — was barred from attending as punishment for violating awards rules by sending e-mails to Oscar voters urging them to back "The Hurt Locker" over "Avatar."

Oscar overseers said Chartier still will receive his best-picture Oscar, but at a later time.

"We haven't spoken to him yet," Shapiro said. "He sent me a very beautiful e-mail. He had a party thrown for him, and I think he's very pleased."

Peter Max,StefanV.Raducanu*,MyWorldNewsCenter*, FranceWebNewsCenter*,+++

Peter Max spends time daily allowing his creativity to flow, while giving gifts from his heart to worthy causes on a continued basis to ensure protection to all that is living here on this planet. His heartfelt giving fills this universe with positive vibration. A universe in which Peter has pondered throughout his life, the more it is pondered, the more it expands.

I had asked Peter what his advice would be to the children that will benefit from his kindness. His message was to the Parents – allow a child the space, choice and freedom to create and grow; just as you plant a tree on a big lot to allow it the room and the chance to expand. Peter’s mother created space for Peter to experiment, explore and create from all types of mediums- paints, paper, crayons, colored pencils are only a few . Best of all Peter’s mother always gladly cleared the space for another day of creativity. Allowing the creativity to flow without worry or restriction. Giving a child the means and the opportunity to express fully.

Peter Max is truly a man of the world. Born in Berlin his family moved to Shanghai during his early childhood. Peter fondly recalls the Friday evening meals in which his family shared their home, dinner and clothing from his father’s department store with those neighbors in need. That lesson in giving has been prevalent through Peter Max’s life. At the age of 16, Peter moved to the United States where he finished high school and went on to college.

Peter’s passion for Astronomy lead a young Peter Max to become aware of the enormousness of it all, the more you begin to know, the bigger it gets. What starts out as one star, becomes a Sun, a galaxy and part of the universe. Peter’s love of astronomy is omnipresent in his art, a true indicator of the vastness of his creativity and generosity.

Peter Max’s artwork has been commissioned by the United Nations, the governments of several countries to include but not limited to the United States. Peter’s images have been seen on postage stamps to airplanes. His charity efforts are literally on a day to day basis whether it be saving Cindy Woo, the cow desperate to escape slaughter, the Artic seals or the planet as a whole, Peter’s generosity has made an enormous impact. Truly a Universal Citizen. When asked what possibilities he is out to create the answer is loud and clear- “Love all, serve all”.

A Facebook Faux Pas

Does your company have friends or fans on Facebook?

The distinction is important because it not only reflects on your brand but has implications for your chances of success in social media.

Let me start with Facebook Rule #1:  People have friends, businesses have fans.

You may not be aware but Facebook offers three forms of presence on their platform:  Accounts, Pages (aka "Fan Pages") and Groups.  Each serves a particular purpose.

Facebook Accounts are the foundation of Facebook and to do anything on Facebook, one must have one.  According to Facebook's Terms of Service, accounts are for "real people" and must contain "real names and information".  Additionally, the terms state you cannot use your "personal profile for your own commercial gain."

Those terms pretty much rule out creating an account for your business.  However, I have noticed – with increasing frequency – people creating personal accounts for their businesses.  Not only is this in violation of Facebook's TOS but it's like trying to use the handle of a screwdriver as hammer – you're using the wrong tool for the job and it doesn't look terribly smart. Fortunately, Facebook has an answer with "Pages."

Facebook realized people were creating fictitious user accounts for their businesses so they created Facebook Pages.  I won't say that Pages are perfect but they are purposely designed for fictitious entities like businesses, brands, products, organizations, bands, personalities, etc.  What's more they come with a suite of tools that give you insight into your "fan" base which you cannot get with a personal account.

Facebook Pages have another advantage in they they are designed to integrate into Facebook's social network in a way that is more conducive to a business.  This makes sense when you consider that we relate with our friends differently from how we relate to businesses.  On Facebook, a "friend" defines a close relationship that offers parity between parties.  A "fan" relationship, on the other hand, is more casual and less symmetric but also more viral, meaning fan-ship (if that were a word) spreads much more easily than friend-ship.

Additionally, creating an account for you business rather than a page also hides your business in the vast pool of personal accounts rather than integrating it into Facebook's directory of businesses.  If you're a plumber, would you rather have your page listed under plumbers in the Yellow Pages or listed in the White Pages under whatever part of your business name you happened to squeeze into the "Last Name" field of a personal profile?  Put down that screwdriver!

Lastly, there are Facebook Groups.  Some businesses have gone the route of creating a Facebook Group for their business but, alas, this is probably not performing as intended.  This is because groups are membership-based entities in Facebook and are generally designed to allow members of an existing organization to have a "meeting" space on Facebook (e.g. a chess club or user group).  For a business, groups are not good for cultivating new relationships (i.e. marketing) but for keeping and strengthening those that already exist (i.e. customer retention/satisfaction).

In our business, we have yet to recommend that a business create a Facebook Group.  This is usually for one of three reasons.  1) most businesses are not ready to manage their own communities; 2) Facebook Groups lack the kind of support from Facebook to make them real business tools; and 3) LinkedIn provides a better platform for this type of community.

In summary, think of Facebook as a massive conference or trade show where people register (e.g. create Facebook accounts with personal profiles), businesses set-up booths (e.g. Facebook pages) and people can break out into special interest groups (Facebook groups).  So, if your business is trying to use Facebook as another place to interact with potential or current customers, it pays to take a little time to learn how the system works before you hang up your shingle.

Ready?  Maybe it's time to create your business' Facebook Page.

The Young Explorer
By Osvaldo Castillo
El Observador

The early teen years are a time of exploration for most kids. It is a time to wonder what else is out there beyond their city, state or country.
But while most middle school students are exploring the world through video games, computers and the internet, Jose Rocha has an opportunity to set foot on foreign soil.
Jose Andres Rocha, a 7th grader from Quimby Oaks Middle School in San Jose, is one of two students from San Jose to be accepted into the People to People International Student Ambassador Program, an educational travel program founded by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The European Odyssey will take Jose to France, Italy and Greece for 20 days in the summer of 2010 as a member of the Central Valley (Stockton/Modesto) delegation.
ÒI want to see their culture, food and make friendships with new people,Ó Jose said.
During the 20-day journey, Jose will have an opportunity to stay at the home of a host family, take part in meetings with government officials, and participate in educational activities with other students of his age.
President Dwight D. Eisenhower founded the Program in 1956 on the principal that if people from different cultures came together in peace and friendship, then the countries would soon follow.
Jose has also participated in other activities and programs throughout San Jose including Relay for Life in Saratoga, "Step Out to Fight Diabetes", the Organization for Latino Affairs (OLA), and the Hispanic Heritage Month Event Organization for Latino Affairs (OLA).
ÒI am very proud of him because he is not afraid and takes advantage of all the opportunities that come his way,Ó said his mother Leticia Rocha.
JoseÕs other interests include soccer, math, science, social studies and NASA.
ÒI want to be an astronaut like Jose Hernandez,Ó Jose said. ÒThat is why I participate in EAA Young Eagles program.Ó
The total cost of the European Odyssey is $7,189.00, which includes all transportation, accommodations, meals and educational activities.
Jose is currently seeking financial sponsors to help him with his tuition expenses.
You can help send Jose on his European Odyssey by writing a $5, $10, $15, or $20 check to the People to People Ambassador Programs. Do not forget to include his name and Delegation ID# 10051787
Name: Jose Rocha
Delegate ID#: 10051787
Mail the check to:
People to People Ambassador Programs
P.O. Box 34902
Seattle, WA 98124-1902.
To find out more about the People to People Ambassador Program visit www.peopletopeople.com or email Jose at JoseAndresRocha@att.net.
This young Hispanic student has already demonstrated a very high academic potential. He will benefit greatly from this experience. Consider providing him with your carefully considered support.
